Houses in multiple occupation grants

Houses in Multiple Occupation (HMO) grants are given to help with enforcement notices about improvements to fire safety and for the provision of extra basic amenities.

 

Who can apply?

 

It is only available to landlords:

 

  • who have passed an approved course in professional property management
  • who do not owe us money
  • who have no convictions (including formal cautions) for grant fraud, illegal eviction, harassment, or non compliance with notices in the last ten years, or where a case for one of the above matters is pending.

 

Minimum grant approval amount is £250 per dwelling or letting within the HMO.

 

Applications in Wembley, Willesden Green, and Cricklewood will be prioritised.

 

Conditions

 

Landlords pay the first £2,000 plus a means tested contribution.

 

The grant availability is halved where works not started by agreed start date specified in the enforcement notice.

 

The grant conditions run for five years from the date of completion of any works. 

 

The grant is conditional upon:

 

  • the HMO being adequately insured
  • rent being charged at the levels set by rent officer
  • the HMO being maintained free of serious housing health and safety rating system (HHSRS) category one hazards
  • the HMO being permanently let as HMO

 

The grant must be repaid in full if the grant conditions are breached, or if the HMO is sold within the five year grant period.
