500th tree planted

Cllr Lorber plants a tree with help from pupilsLeader of Brent Council, Cllr Paul Lorber, joined  children from Barham Primary School to plant the borough's 500th highway tree on Thursday 26 March.

The new tree, a red-twigged Lime (Tilia Platyphyllos Rubra), is on the green at the junction of Bridgewater Road and Harrow Road,  Sudbury.

The spot is near the dead bole of a tree that previously stood on the green.  Brent Council policy is where appropriate to  plant a new tree to replace those which die or are lost for any other reason. Red-twigged Lime is a medium grower and is ideal for planting in verges and parks, and even in areas which suffer from air pollution. Its young shoots are a bright brown-red, and it looks particularly effective in late winter.

"I'm delighted to mark this key milestone in our plans to plant thousands of new trees across Brent. Five hundred trees so far is an investment in a sustainable future for our borough, as well as a visible environmental improvement," said Cllr Lorber.

"Trees like this should still be about when the Barham Primary School children who joined me today are well into adulthood. This is just one more way in which we are making Brent cleaner, greener and safer."
