The council can demand owners fumigate houses infested by cockroaches, mice, rats, bedbugs and other pests. It has enforcement powers to ensure the work is carried out. It can remedy houses infected by vermin.
The council also offers a removal of rubbish from private land service.
Private Housing Services based at Mahatma Gandhi House works to remedy poor housing conditions, such as dampness and overcrowding, which increase the risk of asthma and tuberculosis respectively.
