Alleygating

Gates installed at the end of alleyways and passages can help to reduce environmental crime. The gates protect the alleyways and are looked after by the residents who live around them.

Advantages of the gates are:

  • safer play area for your children
  • reduced likelihood of dumped rubbish
  • reduced dog fouling
  • improved look of the area
  • reduced numbers of burglaries
  • less opportunity for things like graffiti, drinking and drug-taking
  • better community spirit.

Gates should be:

  • in an alleyway, or similar space between the boundaries of neighbouring properties
  • installed at least six metres from the road
  • where there are suitable side fences or hedges that will stop potential intruders from easily entering the alleyway.

Alley-gating schemes are paid for by the council or by residents.
