What kind of courses do you offer?
You can choose to develop all your skills (listening, speaking, reading and writing) or perhaps just focus on conversation or writing. We also have courses for ESOL students wanting to develop their computer skills, courses to help ESOL students pass the car theory-driving test and courses in citizenship. Please see the course listing or ask for specific course information sheets for further details. Course information sheets are available from reception in all our centres.
What levels do you have?
From beginners to advanced level.
Where can I study?
We run courses in all our main BACES’ sites, as well as other community venues
How many hours a week can I study?
You can choose to study anything from 2 hours per week up to 14 hours per week.
What time of day are your courses?
We run courses in the mornings, the afternoons and the evenings.
How long are your courses?
We have courses running from September to February (18 weeks), September to June or July (30 and 36 weeks) and February to July (18 weeks).
What qualification can I get?
Nearly all our courses lead to either a Cambridge ESOL Skills for Life or English Speaking Board qualification. This is taken either in February or July, depending on the number of hours you are studying each week.
When can I join a class?
Some classes start in September and some classes start in February. Please see the course listing or ask for specific course information sheets for further details. It may be possible to join a class at other times, please check at the centre where the course is based.
What should I do if I want to join a class?
Before you can join an ESOL class, we need to check your level of English. Please contact the centre where you are interested in studying to book an assessment.

Level guide: Entry 1 (lower) = Absolute beginner (eg has problems writing address); Entry 1= Beginner;
          Entry 2 = pre – intermediate; Entry 3 = Intermediate; Level 1 = Upper – intermediate; Level 2 = Advanced

Availability: Not all courses are available at all centres or at all levels.

A general English course that covers all aspects of English (speaking, listening, reading and writing).

Learners who pass the speaking and listening exam at the end of this course and attend enough of the course will also have satisfied the language requirement to apply for citizenship or settlement (indefinite leave to remain) but please note that this only applies to the Entry level courses (E1 to E3). Level 1 or 2 students cannot use these courses to apply for citizenship or settlement but instead need to do the Life in Britain test, which is not offered by BACES – refer them to Learn Direct.

Speak ListenCovers conversation skills.

LiteracyFocus is on writing – punctuation, spelling etc. Can be done alone or in addition to any other class including a read write class (the accreditation is different to that of the read write classes). It is for those who feel they need extra help with their writing.2 hrs per week for 36 weeks£176.50£16
Living in BritainThis course is offered at E2 and E3 and covers all aspects of English (reading, writing, speaking and listening). Examples of topics that might be included on this course are education, housing, work, health politics, history, law etc.

Learners who pass the speaking and listening exam at the end of this course and attend enough of the course will have satisfied the language requirement to apply for citizenship or settlement (indefinite leave to remain).

Although learners can use one of our general English courses or a Speak Listen course to get citizenship or settlement, the Living in Britain course offers a faster way to do this as it lasts 18 weeks and is only 2 hours per week.

Youth Group coursesFor learners aged 16 – 24. The basic course is the 7.5 hours per week English course, which is over 3 days per week, in addition to which they can also do the youth group maths course and the youth group computer course.Per week:
7.5 hrs of English, 2.5 or 2 hrs of maths, 2.5 hrs of ICT.

English for Beginner Computer UsersLearners should have E3 level in reading and writing. The course covers language needed to learn about computers and is for learners who have very little knowledge of how to use a computer. At the end of this course learners should have the English to be able to progress onto the Entry to ICT (BCS) course.2 hrs per week for 18 weeks£88£16
English for Computer UsersLearners should have E3 level in reading and writing. The course covers language needed to learn about computers and is for learners who have some knowledge of how to use a computer.
